What is composite decking?

Composite decking is an exterior rated product with an inner core compiled of wood fibers and melded down plastics. The core is wrapped in a PVC cover to create low maintenance and protect the wood fibers for longer lasting performance. The average warranty on composite deck boards for fading is a minimum of 25 years. This is possible by minimizing the amount of wood that is produced in each board. For example, some companies designed a composite wrap with specs of wood fibers in it to give the design a more realistic look to a wooden deck board. This specific board will be more likely to fade sooner than others because more wood is exposed to the sun. In addition, a common complaint among homeowners that install a composite deck is the temperature that the deck becomes due to direct sunlight. This occurs because the wood fibers in the board capture heat. In comparison to a wooden deck board, composite can get anywhere from 1-3 degrees hotter. For some, this is not a worry due to the warranties, lifespan, and options that are available with composite. For others this can be enough to make them reconsider.
